• What are some recent consumer behavior trends that are influencing the industry?

Nearly every sector of the transportation industry has been effected by the trend to be "green." This trend can be sourced two two main motivations, cutting costs, and appealing to consumer to requests. It is becoming more and more general consensus that the environment is important, and companies should make an effort to conduct business in a manner that is least damaging to the environment that we all share.

Companies attempt to meet this goal by either implementing new technologies, such as BioFuels and solar energy, or making current technologies more efficient.

In July of 2012, McDonald's announced that it would be partnering with Dubai-based company Neutral Fuels to convert nearly 22,000 liters of grease from their restaurants into BioDiesel. This BioDiesel would be used on the company's entire United Arab Emirates distribution network. This measure will not only save the company large sums of money on oil, but it will put to use thousands of liters of grease that would have otherwise been discarded, and in turn put less C02 into the atmosphere. This operation is on the small-scale, only 80 restaurants, and is a low-risk operation that McDonald's can use to advertise to consumers its green practices.

Amazon.com is engaging in a similar "green" effort. "Amazon is working directly with manufacturers such as Fisher-Price to develop "Frustration Free Packaging." This means no plastic clamshells, no wire ties, no molded plastic holders. Just a few simple recyclable cardboard bits." This new practice will not only save Amazon and Fisher Price money, it will use current resources more efficiently, by eliminating unnecessary waste, and at the same time making opening a package much easier.

Companies take the concerns of consumers extremely seriously. While the "green" movement has been partially economically motivated, it's rising importance can be attested to the requests of the consumer. If we as a society make it clear that we want something, the market will respond. A consensus idea that "green" is good will produce results.

  1. Where are the numbers proving that amazon will save more money on this new packaging?

  2. interesting that McDonalds would do such a Biodiosel initiative. Very un-McDonalds like.
