Nearly 75 percent of maritime shipping is done from one ocean to another ocean. The United States, however, is not home to the top three overseas shipping companies. Evergreen Marine, Nippon Yusean Kabushiki Kaisha, and AP Moller-Maersk, based in Taiwan, Japan, and Denmark respectively, are the three biggest shipping companies.
The federal government has recently tried to improve America's shipping industry by investing in advanced technology. Despite the boost by the federal government, shipping job opportunities overseas are still more plentiful than America's. The United States should do more to grow this vital segment of the economy.

What do you suggest the U.S. do to "grow this vital segment of the economy"?
ReplyDeleteAre there any companies based in the U.S that could potentially grow and become a top three major shipping company?
ReplyDeleteThe Federal Government's "investment into advanced technologies" will not make a difference. The U.S's shipbuilding industry has gone south due to subsidy by the Federal Government. When a government agency keeps an industry afloat, despite inefficiencies, unless it is the only choice, buyers will go to a more efficient and cheap shipbuilder, such as South Korea.
